Bar Council of India Rules
What Your Website Can and Can't Include
Compliance
Rule 36 of the Bar Council of India Rules generally prohibits advocates from soliciting work or advertising, directly or indirectly. A 2008 amendment carved out a narrow exception allowing advocates to maintain a limited, purely informational website — but only with specific content, and enforcement of what falls outside that exception has been active, including through 2025.
Generally permitted:
- Name of the advocate or firm
- Contact details (phone, email, office address)
- Educational qualifications
- Enrollment / bar registration details
- Areas of practice, stated factually
Generally not permitted:
- Client testimonials or reviews
- Case results, win rates, or success claims
- Comparative claims ("best lawyer in...")
- Solicitation-style calls to action
- Celebrity endorsements or promotional-style video content

Frequently Asked Questions
Can law firms and advocates have websites in India at all?
Yes — a 2008 amendment to Bar Council of India Rule 36 permits a limited, informational website, though only with specific content and framing.
Can I show case results or win rates?
This is also generally considered outside the permitted scope and has been an active area of enforcement — we don't recommend it.
What can I actually include?
Generally: your name or firm name, contact details, educational qualifications, bar enrollment details, and a factual list of practice areas.
Is SEO for lawyers allowed in India?
This is a genuinely evolving question without a fully settled answer. Educational content that informs rather than solicits is the generally safer approach, and it's what we build our content strategy around for law firm clients.
Do I need a disclaimer on my website?
Yes — most Indian law firm websites carry a disclaimer confirming the site is informational and that viewing it doesn't create an attorney-client relationship. We include this as standard.
Can I write blog posts about recent court judgments?
Generally, yes — summarizing or explaining a published court decision is treated as informational content, not solicitation, provided it doesn't pivot into promoting the firm's own results.
What happens if a law firm's website is found non-compliant?
Enforcement runs through the State Bar Council and can include disciplinary proceedings, which is why we'd rather build conservatively from the start than risk that outcome.
Can I update my own content after the site is live?
Yes — the site is built on WordPress, so you can update practice areas, attorney profiles, and articles yourself.
Do you offer support after the site goes live?
Yes, through our website maintenance packages.
